It’s winter down here and I’m cold and dehydrated, which makes for a vata fiesta (yes my mind and body are going a bit haywire!). Cold, dry air makes for cold dry hands, feet, hair and mood. So I’m covering up as much as possible (can you say double socks!!), AND oiling myself from head to toe, but one of the things I find challenging is staying hydrated!

Water has always been my goto for hydration. I’m not big on juices and I tend to cut back on tea and coffees in the winter since they’re a bit too drying and stimulating.  But cold water (room temperature) at this time of year feels a little too much like torture for me!   Warm water works… but it’s a bit boring!

So I’ve come up with a solution that keeps things interesting and helps with the hydration situation…

Spiced Water

What I like about spice water…

  • It tastes like a little bit of heaven so drinking it makes me feel like I’m doing something good for myself.
  • I use warming spices which help to keep my digestion happy (and going).
  • It’s super easy to do AND I can mix it up a little bit and vary the spices to suit my mood and tastes (that’s a little gift for my vata).

So if you’re interested in something warming and hydrating for the winter check out my spice water mix and match recipe below and give your mind and body a vata balancing treat!

Winter Spiced Water

Take…

1-2 cups of warm water (somewhere in the 70 – 85 degrees Fahrenheit range)

Add… (choose up to 4)

  • Cinnamon stick – A few medium sized shards
  • Star anise – 1 piece
  • Ginger – 1 piece uncrystallized OR 1 small slice fresh
  • Peel – One to two 1.5 inch pieces of fresh lemon or orange peel (avoid getting too much of the white pith – it’s bitter!)
  • Cardamom – 1-2 pods, cracked open
  • Fennel seeds – 1/8 tsp
  • Turmeric root – 1-2 thin slices

Make…

Add spices to a cup.  Pour boiling water over the top.  Let steep (covered if possible) up to 5mins… Enjoy!

Oh and if it’s summer where you are, no worries, you can “spice” up your water too!

Summer Spice Water

Take…

1-2 cups of room temp water (cool water works if it’s REALLY hot outside, avoid iced water)

Add… (choose up to 3)

  • Mint – 1-3 fresh leaves
  • Cinnamon stick – 1-3 medium shards
  • Cardamom – 1-2 pods cracked open
  • Ginger – 1 piece uncrystallized OR 1 small slice fresh
  • Fennel seeds – 1/8 tsp
  • Star anise – 1 piece
  • Peel – 1-2 1.5 inch pieces of lime or sweet orange peel

Make…

Add spices to water, stir and let sit for 10 – 20mins before drinking

Oh and don’t forget…

Hydration is such an important part of keeping your mind and body happy, supple (and juicy!)!  So remember to drink as much you need AND remember that the amount of water you need may change from season to season, so be mindful of your state of mind (look out for dizziness, mood swings, forgetfulness) and body(signs of dehydration include constipation, chapped lips, dry skin, headaches) in order to ensure you’re getting enough!
